Your official GED transcript is the formal record of your GED test scores and credential โ required by colleges, employers, and licensing boards that need documented proof of your high school equivalency. This guide explains how to obtain your GED transcript, what the transcript includes, how much it costs, how long it takes, and what to do if your records are missing or from before the digital era.
A GED transcript is an official document issued by GED Testing Service (GEDTS) that records your GED test results โ including your score on each of the four subject tests (Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies) and the date you completed your credential. The transcript is the formal, verifiable record of your GED achievement.
Transcripts differ from your GED diploma: the diploma is the credential itself (the certificate you receive), while the transcript is the detailed academic record showing your scores. When colleges, universities, employers, or licensing agencies ask for proof of your GED, they typically require an official transcript โ not just a photocopy of your diploma.
If you are still studying for the GED, our ged study guide covers all four subject areas with practice materials to help you pass and earn your credential.
For GEDs earned in 2014 or later: All modern GED records are managed through the myGED portal at ged.com. To order your official transcript:
For GEDs earned before 2014: Historical GED records are held by the state where you tested, not by GED Testing Service. Contact your state's Department of Education or adult education office to request records. Each state has its own process and may charge different fees.
If you need to complete your GED before ordering transcripts, see our ged classes near me directory or our ged ready practice test to prepare for the remaining subjects.
If you cannot find your GED records, the solution depends on when you tested:
GED earned 2014 or later: Log in to ged.com with the exact email you used when registering for the test. If you forgot your email, use the account recovery option. Your scores are permanently in the GEDTS database โ they do not expire. If you can't recover your account, contact GED Testing Service customer support directly at ged.com/contact.
GED earned before 2014: Records are held by your state. Locate your state's adult education or GED records office (typically part of the Department of Education). Bring or provide your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and approximate test date. Many states have digitized older records โ processing can take 2โ6 weeks. Fees are typically $5โ$25.
GED earned before 1990s: Some very old records may only exist in paper archives. Contact your state's records office and be prepared for longer processing times and possible in-person verification requirements.
