  1. What is the value of 3 + 4 × 2 − 1?

    Answer: 10

    By order of operations (PEMDAS), multiplication is performed before addition and subtraction: 4 × 2 = 8, then 3 + 8 − 1 = 10.

  2. A shirt originally costs $45 and is on sale for 20% off. What is the sale price?

    Answer: $36.00

    20% of $45 = 0.20 × 45 = $9. Subtracting the discount: $45 − $9 = $36.

  3. Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 17

    Answer: x = 6

    Subtract 5 from both sides: 2x = 12. Divide both sides by 2: x = 6.

  4. A rectangle has a length of 8 feet and a width of 5 feet. What is its area?

    Answer: 40 square feet

Area of a rectangle = length × width = 8 × 5 = 40 square feet. The perimeter (26 ft) is found by adding all sides, not multiplying.

  5. What is the mean (average) of 12, 18, 24, 6, and 10?

    Answer: 14

    Add all values: 12 + 18 + 24 + 6 + 10 = 70. Divide by the count of numbers (5): 70 ÷ 5 = 14.

  6. A store buys an item for $80 and sells it for $100. What is the percent markup on the cost?

    Answer: 25%

    Percent markup = (selling price − cost) ÷ cost × 100 = (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. The base is the original cost ($80), not the selling price.
