Free Journeyman Electrician’s Special Occupancies Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: An electrician is installing wiring in a patient bed location within a general care area of a hospital. Which type of receptacle is required at this location?
- A tamper-resistant receptacle
- A weather-resistant receptacle
- A hospital-grade receptacle (Correct answer)
- Any standard 15A duplex receptacle
Correct answer: A hospital-grade receptacle
According to NEC Article 517.18(B), all receptacles provided for patient bed locations in general care areas must be listed as "hospital grade" to ensure higher durability and more reliable connectivity for medical equipment.
Question 2: In a commercial garage used for major automotive repairs where gasoline-powered vehicles are serviced, what is the classification of the area extending from the floor up to a level of 18 inches?
- Class I, Division 1
- Unclassified
- Class II, Division 2
- Class I, Division 2 (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Class I, Division 2
NEC Article 511.3(C)(1) specifies that for major repair garages without adequate mechanical ventilation, the entire floor area up to a level of 18 inches above the floor is classified as a Class I, Division 2 hazardous location due to the potential presence of flammable gasoline vapors, which are heavier than air.
Question 3: An electrician is wiring a new, permanently installed 240-volt, single-phase circulation pump motor for a swimming pool. What specific type of protection is required for the outlet supplying this motor?
- Ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection (Correct answer)
- Arc-fault circuit-interrupter (AFCI) protection
- A lockable disconnecting means only
- Surge protection
Correct answer: Ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection
NEC Article 680.21(C) mandates that outlets supplying single-phase pool pump motors connected to 120-volt through 240-volt branch circuits must be provided with ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection for personnel.
Question 4: Which of the following wiring methods is explicitly prohibited for use in an agricultural building subject to a corrosive atmosphere from livestock confinement?
- Type UF cable
- Jacketed Type MC cable
- Electrical metallic tubing (EMT) (Correct answer)
- Type NMC cable
Correct answer: Electrical metallic tubing (EMT)
NEC Article 547 covers agricultural buildings. Due to the highly corrosive environments often present, 547.5 specifies permitted wiring methods. Electrical metallic tubing (EMT) is not listed as a permitted method and is generally considered unsuitable for such corrosive atmospheres, unlike Type UF, NMC, or jacketed MC cables which are permitted.
Question 5: A 2-inch rigid metal conduit leaves a Class I, Division 1 hazardous location and enters an adjacent unclassified area. According to the NEC, where must the sealing fitting be located?
- Within 18 inches of the boundary, on the classified side only.
- On either side of the boundary, but no more than 10 feet from the boundary. (Correct answer)
- Exactly at the boundary between the two areas.
- Within 36 inches of the first enclosure in the unclassified area.
Correct answer: On either side of the boundary, but no more than 10 feet from the boundary.
NEC 501.15(A)(4) requires a conduit seal in each run leaving a Class I, Division 1 location. It permits the sealing fitting to be installed on either side of the boundary within 10 feet of that boundary. If placed in the unclassified area, the Division 1 wiring method must extend to the seal.
Question 6: When installing electrical systems for a traveling carnival, what is the minimum size copper equipment grounding conductor (EGC) required for branch circuits supplying rides and concessions?
- 10 AWG
- Sized per Table 250.122 based on the OCPD
- 14 AWG
- 12 AWG (Correct answer)
Correct answer: 12 AWG
NEC Article 525 contains specific rules for carnivals and similar events. Section 525.30(C) mandates that the equipment grounding conductor for branch circuits shall not be smaller than 12 AWG copper, providing a more robust ground than might otherwise be required by Table 250.122 for smaller circuits due to the temporary and portable nature of the installations.
