Question 1

What is the primary purpose of crime scene documentation?

Accepted Answer

To create an accurate record for investigations

Answer

Crime scene documentation, through notes, sketches, and photographs, serves as the foundation for the entire investigation. Its primary purpose is to create a comprehensive, objective, and permanent record of the scene's condition and the location of all evidence. This detailed record is essential for reconstruction, analysis, and presentation in court, ensuring accuracy and accountability.

Question 2

Which method is commonly used to document a crime scene?

Accepted Answer

Photographs, sketches, and notes

Answer

These three methods provide a comprehensive and multi-faceted record of a crime scene. Photographs capture visual details, sketches illustrate spatial relationships and measurements, and notes document observations, evidence descriptions, and other pertinent information. This combination ensures thorough and accurate documentation for legal proceedings.

Question 3

Why is a crime scene sketch important?

Accepted Answer

To show spatial relationships of evidence

Answer

A crime scene sketch is crucial because it provides a scaled diagram illustrating the precise location of evidence relative to fixed points and other items within the scene. This visual representation helps investigators and jurors understand the layout and context of the evidence, which photographs alone cannot always convey accurately. It clarifies spatial relationships essential for reconstructing events.

Question 4

Which type of report summarizes the findings and details of a crime scene investigation?

Accepted Answer

Investigative report

Answer

An investigative report serves as the comprehensive summary of a crime scene investigation, detailing all findings, observations, evidence collected, and actions taken. It consolidates information from various sources, providing a complete narrative essential for legal proceedings, further investigation, and future reference. This report is the official record of the entire process.

Question 5

What should be included in a crime scene investigator’s field notes?

Accepted Answer

Observations, evidence descriptions, and witness statements

Answer

Field notes are critical for documenting immediate observations, detailed descriptions of evidence, and initial witness statements at a crime scene. These notes serve as the primary, contemporaneous record of the investigation, ensuring accuracy and providing a foundational basis for official reports and court testimony. They capture raw, unfiltered information as it is discovered.
