Free Agile Business Analysis Agile Mindset and Principles Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Which of the following statements BEST represents a core principle of the Agile Manifesto?
- Following a detailed plan is prioritized over responding to change.
- Comprehensive documentation is favored over working software.
- Customer collaboration is valued more than contract negotiation. (Correct answer)
- Processes and tools are considered more important than individuals and interactions.
Correct answer: Customer collaboration is valued more than contract negotiation.
The Agile Manifesto explicitly states four core values, one of which is 'Customer collaboration over contract negotiation.' This emphasizes building a partnership with the customer to better understand and deliver on their needs, rather than relying strictly on initial contractual terms.
Question 2: An Agile team is two weeks into a sprint when the Product Owner brings a new, urgent requirement from a key stakeholder. According to an Agile mindset, what is the MOST appropriate first step for the Business Analyst?
- Reject the requirement immediately as it is outside the scope of the current sprint.
- Add the new requirement to the sprint backlog and instruct the development team to work on it immediately.
- Advise the Product Owner to wait until the next sprint planning meeting to discuss the requirement.
- Facilitate a conversation with the Product Owner and development team to understand the requirement's value and impact on the sprint goal. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Facilitate a conversation with the Product Owner and development team to understand the requirement's value and impact on the sprint goal.
An Agile mindset embraces change and focuses on collaboration to deliver value. The most appropriate action is to facilitate a discussion to understand the new requirement's business value and the potential impact of introducing it into the current sprint. This allows the team to make an informed decision collaboratively, which might involve swapping it for a lower-priority item or placing it in the product backlog for a future sprint.
Question 3: What is the primary measure of progress on an Agile project?
- Percentage of tasks completed in the project plan.
- Comprehensive status reports and documentation.
- Approval of detailed requirement specifications.
- Delivery of valuable, working software. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Delivery of valuable, working software.
One of the 12 principles behind the Agile Manifesto is 'Working software is the primary measure of progress.' This principle emphasizes delivering functional increments of the product over intermediate deliverables like documentation or status reports, as working software provides tangible value to the customer.
Question 4: The Agile principle of "Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential" implies that a business analyst should focus on:
- Delivering only the bare minimum features to meet the deadline.
- Building a comprehensive solution with all conceivable features from the start.
- Identifying and prioritizing the features that deliver the highest value with the least effort. (Correct answer)
- Avoiding all documentation to speed up the development process.
Correct answer: Identifying and prioritizing the features that deliver the highest value with the least effort.
This principle encourages teams to focus on the simplest solutions that meet the current needs. For a business analyst, this means working with stakeholders to identify the most valuable features and prioritizing them, avoiding unnecessary complexity and 'gold-plating' that doesn't add significant value. It's about being efficient and effective.
Question 5: A project manager accustomed to traditional waterfall projects is concerned about the lack of a detailed, upfront requirements specification document in a new Agile project. How should the Agile Business Analyst address this concern?
- Create a comprehensive requirements document before the first sprint begins to satisfy the project manager.
- Explain that in Agile, requirements emerge and are detailed just-in-time through user stories in the backlog. (Correct answer)
- Agree that it's a significant risk and escalate the issue to the project sponsor.
- Ignore the project manager's concern as they do not understand the Agile process.
Correct answer: Explain that in Agile, requirements emerge and are detailed just-in-time through user stories in the backlog.
A core tenet of Agile is moving away from extensive upfront documentation. The business analyst should educate the project manager on the Agile approach, explaining that requirements are captured iteratively in the product backlog, often as user stories, and are refined just before and during development sprints. This allows for flexibility and adaptation to change.
Question 6: Which of the seven principles of Agile Business Analysis, as described in the IIBA's Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide, guides practitioners to identify and eliminate activities that do not contribute to satisfying the customer's need?
- See the Whole
- Get Real Using Examples
- Think as a Customer
- Avoid Waste (Correct answer)
Correct answer: Avoid Waste
The 'Avoid Waste' principle specifically guides business analysis practitioners to focus on value-adding activities. Any activity that does not directly contribute to understanding the need or delivering a solution that satisfies that need is considered waste and should be eliminated.
