Is the VDV exam different depending on which state you take it in?

Relocating from one state to another in a few months and trying to figure out if my (VDV) Voice Data Video Technician Certified prep needs to change based on where I'll be taking the actual exam.

I've been studying "VDV" and the materials seem standardized, but I've heard the exam can vary by state or have different question weights.

Specifically wondering:
- Are passing scores the same across states?
- Does the content on VDV exam differ by state?
- If I pass in one state, does it transfer?

The official resources are confusing on this. Some say it's a national exam, others suggest state-specific versions exist.

Anyone who's taken VDV in multiple states or knows how the portability works — would really appreciate the clarity before I invest more time in state-specific prep.

The free vdv cabling infrastructure helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.

Quick data point: I spent 9 weeks studying, 1-2 hours a day, and passed with a 81%.

The section on VDV exam took me the longest to feel confident about. Eventually I just drilled practice questions until I could answer them without hesitation.

What testing center did you end up booking? Some of them have much shorter wait times than others right now.

Went through this exact question when I was prepping. The VDV material on "VDV" is actually not as bad as it looks — once it clicks it clicks.

What helped me was finding one resource that explained it from first principles instead of just giving me the "right answer." Made a huge difference on the scenario-based questions.

Also: don't underestimate the importance of reviewing your wrong answers more than your right ones. I learned more from 20 wrong answers than 200 correct ones.

The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.

If you're already working in this field, the VDV exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "VDV" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

Yeah I went through this exact same worry before my first attempt and honestly I overthought it. The actual VDV content is standardized so your core prep doesn't really change state to state. What got me the first time wasn't anything regional, it was that I leaned way too hard on the general theory stuff and barely touched the hands on side. Failed by a few points and was pretty annoyed because I felt like I knew the material.

Second time around I changed my whole approach. I drilled the practical sections way harder, especially the vdv fiber optics questions since that's where I bombed the most. Did them over and over until the connector types and testing steps were automatic. Passed easily. So don't stress about the state thing, just make sure you're not skipping the technical weeds like I did the first go.
