Taking my ERT next week and looking for last-minute tips from people who've been through it. I feel like I've covered the content, but exam-day strategy is something the study guides don't really address.
A few specific things I'm wondering about: how strict is the time management, and should I flag and skip difficult exam prep questions rather than spending too long on them? Any patterns in how the questions are ordered?
I've been running through the free ert emergency response procedures & protocols questions and answers timed to simulate real conditions, and my pacing feels okay. I also did a final review of emergency response technician certification for the sections I was least confident about. But I know practice conditions are never exactly like the real thing.
Day-before strategy: do you review notes, do a light practice session, or rest completely? I've heard conflicting advice on this.
Really helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. I'm at week 5 of my ERT prep and the practice test section is exactly where I'm struggling too. Going to try the approach you described and see if it moves my scores.
Bookmarking this. I'm still in the early stages of ERT prep and threads like this are way more useful than generic study guides. The specifics about exam prep are particularly helpful — that's the section I've been avoiding.
Great discussion. One thing nobody mentions: sleep the night before matters more than one more study session. Went in fully rested for my ERT and felt sharper than expected.
Quick update for anyone following this thread — I just hit 84% on my last full practice test, which honestly surprised me since I was stuck in the low 70s for weeks. Something clicked after I stopped trying to memorize everything and started actually working through the reasoning on each question type. I'm planning to sit the real ERT in about three weeks, so I've got time for a couple more practice runs before then.
Not quite at exam day yet so I can't give firsthand tips, but I'm curious what others say too. The time pressure thing you mentioned is exactly what I'm anxious about. Did people find the pacing felt different from the practice exams, or is it pretty comparable?
Honestly, I almost bailed two days before mine because I convinced myself I hadn't prepared enough. The time management on the ERT isn't as brutal as people make it sound, but don't sit there overthinking individual questions -- if you're unsure, flag it and move on, you can always come back. The thing nobody told me was that the ICS communication section hits harder than expected, so if you haven't drilled that specifically, go do the free ert incident command system communication practice before you walk in.
The other thing is just don't panic if the first few questions feel weird. It's a different format than most study guides prepare you for and that threw me off early. I nearly talked myself into leaving at the break. Keep going. The back half of the test felt way more familiar and I ended up passing with more room than I expected.
