ICF online vs in-person exam — any difference in difficulty?

I have the option of taking my (ICF) International Coaching Federation Certified exam online at home or going to a testing center. Trying to figure out which is better for me.

Arguments for online:
- No commute stress
- Familiar environment
- More flexible scheduling

Arguments for testing center:
- No home distractions
- More controlled environment
- Better equipment potentially

My main concern with the online version is proctoring — I've heard some certification exams have very strict rules about what's allowed in the room. One wrong move and you're flagged.

Has anyone taken ICF both ways? Or specifically the online version? How was the experience? And does the difficulty or question format actually differ based on how you take it?

Also — any issues with the "ICF" type content being harder in one format vs the other?

The free icf coaching ethics professional standards helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.

Same boat a few months ago. Here's what I'd tell myself:

The ICF exam is more application-focused than the study guides suggest. They test whether you understand ICF, not just whether you can define it.

My tip: when you see a scenario question, mentally walk through it step by step before looking at the answers. The wrong answers are designed to catch people who jump to conclusions.

Good luck — the fact that you're doing this level of prep means you're going to be fine.

I actually failed the first time by a few points. Total gut punch. But passed on the second attempt with a comfortable margin.

What changed: I stopped trying to memorize answers and started actually understanding the material. Specifically on ICF exam — I went back to basics and worked forward from first principles.

Also switched from reading to doing. Less time with the textbook, more time on practice questions with detailed answer explanations.

You've got this. The second attempt is always better because you know exactly what the exam is like.

Great discussion. One thing nobody mentions: sleep the night before matters more than one more study session. Went in fully rested for my ICF and felt sharper than expected.

Quick update: just cleared 82% on my most recent ICF practice set using free icf coaching ethics professional standards. Sitting for the real thing in 3 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.
