Certified coach with ICF ACC level for three years. A colleague suggested I look at IAC certification as an alternative or complementary credential. I can't find a clear comparison of how the two bodies evaluate coaching competency differently — ICF leans heavily on observed coaching demonstrations and mentor coaching, but the IAC process sounds different.
Going through the iac coaching ethics & professional standards practice material and it covers the IAC coaching masteries framework, which feels conceptually similar to ICF core competencies but with different framing. Is the overlap significant enough that IAC adds meaningful credential value for someone already holding ICF ACC?
IAC and ICF use different competency frameworks but both are evaluating similar core coaching skills. The key difference: IAC places more emphasis on demonstrated mastery through recorded session review rather than a standardized exam format. The process is more portfolio-based.
In the coaching market, ICF is the more widely recognized credential — most corporate buyers and coach training programs reference ICF standards. IAC is respected within its community but doesn't have the same market penetration. If you're targeting corporate or organizational coaching, ICF PCC is probably more valuable as the next step than IAC.
The IAC masteries (Presence and Centeredness, Expressing, Caring, Listening, Processing, etc.) are genuinely interesting as a coaching framework and different enough from ICF that engaging with them adds perspective. Whether that's worth pursuing as a formal credential depends on your practice context.
Three years at ACC and you're probably building toward PCC anyway. ICF PCC is significantly more market-recognized than IAC at any level for coaching engagements. Unless you're specifically targeting IAC-aligned programs or clients, the energy probably goes toward the PCC path.
