SNHD food handler card test — how many questions and how fast can you finish?
I start at a new casino restaurant job in Las Vegas on Monday and my manager just told me I need my SNHD food handler card before my first shift. I had no idea this was a requirement — I'm coming from a state where we didn't need any food safety certification for front-of-house work. Trying to figure out how fast I can get this done.
From what I've read the exam is 40 questions and you need to score 75% to pass, so 30 correct. It covers basic food safety topics — temperature danger zones, cross-contamination prevention, proper handwashing, and foodborne illness causes. I've worked in restaurants for 4 years so I know most of this stuff from practice but I've never had to test on it formally.
I found a food handlers test online that seemed pretty representative of the real thing — got 87% on my first run-through, which made me feel better about walking in without a lot of dedicated study time. The questions about specific temperature thresholds were the ones I wasn't sure about, like 165°F for poultry and 145°F for whole muscle cuts.
My main question is whether the online version through the SNHD site is available 24/7 or if there's a registration window. I need to take it tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest. Also, does the card come immediately as a PDF or do they mail a physical card? My manager said they can accept a printout but I want to confirm.
The card is valid for 3 years in Clark County and costs $20 to register. You can take it on your phone if you need to — the SNHD site is mobile-friendly and I did mine on a lunch break in about 25 minutes including registration.
87% on practice means you're fine. The real test is basically the same difficulty. Just know your temperature numbers cold — they ask about them in multiple question formats and it's easy to second-guess yourself.
Watch out for the time-temperature abuse questions — not just the thresholds but the 2-hour and 4-hour rules for food left in the danger zone. Those show up as scenario questions and are easier to miss if you're just memorizing numbers.
The online SNHD exam is available anytime and you get a printable certificate immediately after passing. The physical card comes in the mail within about 2 weeks but the printout works for employment verification in the meantime.
