Aviation maintenance manager at a Part 145 repair station. Our organization is working toward FAA SMS compliance — the requirement is being phased in and we're trying to get ahead of the curve. I'm looking at personal SMS certification options to support our implementation, not just the organizational compliance piece.

Are there recognized individual SMS credentials for aviation maintenance specifically, or is it mostly organizational framework work?

The SMS Pro Foundation Certificate and some ICAO-based SMS credentials are recognized in aviation circles. For maintenance-specific work, the AMT Society also has SMS resources tailored to Part 145 context.

The FAA's own SMS training courses (available through the FAA Safety Team) are free and directly relevant to Part 145 work. Completing those is often more valued by FAA inspectors than third-party credentials because it shows familiarity with the specific regulatory framework.

Honestly for Part 145 compliance work, document your participation in the implementation process itself. A portfolio demonstrating your organization's SMS development is more valuable to career advancement than a standalone credential.
