SMS exam - worth pursuing if you already hold the ASP?

I've had my ASP for two years and my employer is pushing me toward the SMS as a secondary credential. I'm trying to figure out if the prep required is significant or if the ASP overlap makes this relatively straightforward. From what I've read, both exams cover safety management systems, but the SMS leans harder on ANSI/AIHA Z10 and SMS implementation methodology specifically.

My background is manufacturing safety, so industrial hazard recognition isn't a concern. Where I expect to struggle is the safety culture measurement and metrics side - I understand lagging indicators well but the leading indicator frameworks tested on the SMS feel more abstract than what I deal with day to day.

I've scheduled the exam for 8 weeks out and I'm planning about an hour a day. Is that enough for someone with the ASP foundation, or should I push the date? My first diagnostic practice run was 71%, which is borderline for most certifications I've taken.

Also - the SMS body of knowledge lists 8 domains and some of them, like management systems auditing, are areas where I have real work experience but I'm not sure how the exam frames those questions. Do they test procedural knowledge or is it more judgment-based?

The questions are mostly judgment-based rather than procedural, especially in the management systems and safety culture domains. They'll give you a scenario with a safety program that has specific gaps and ask what the SMS-compliant approach is. Knowing the Z10 standard chapter structure helps a lot for those.

I held the ASP before getting my SMS and the overlap is real but don't underestimate the gap. The SMS exam goes deeper on management system auditing, metrics, and safety culture than the ASP does. I studied for 7 weeks at about 90 minutes a day from a 73% starting score and passed with a 79%.

8 weeks at an hour a day from 71% is borderline. I'd bump to 90 minutes if you can. The leading indicators domain has a lot of content that doesn't show up in ASP prep - predictive metrics, behavior-based observation programs, near-miss reporting systems. Give that domain extra time.

The SMS credential has been worth it professionally - it opened doors for senior safety management roles that specifically listed it. Whether it's worth the prep time depends on your sector. Manufacturing and construction employers recognize it well; some others treat it as nice-to-have rather than required.
