Realistic CMP study timeline while working full time — 8 weeks enough?
I've scheduled my CMP exam for about 8 weeks out and I'm starting to second-guess whether that's enough time while holding down a full-time director role. I can realistically commit about 1.5 hours on weeknights and a 3-hour block on Saturday mornings.
The domains I'm most comfortable with are digital strategy and analytics — I've been running performance campaigns for eight years so that content is mostly review. My weaker areas are the classical brand management frameworks and the consumer psychology models that I rarely use in practice.
I've been using the CMP Consumer Behavior and Insights practice quiz to expose gaps and it's been humbling — there are more academic models tested than I expected. For the marketing certification content overall, is 8 weeks reasonable or should I push the date back?
Also wondering whether flashcards or practice tests are more efficient for the final two weeks of prep — curious what worked for people who passed on the first attempt.
Passed in 9 weeks with a similar schedule. The biggest mistake I almost made was spending too long re-reading material instead of testing myself. After week 4, switch almost entirely to question banks. Your score on practice tests is the best predictor of exam day performance.
8 weeks is doable with your background. I'd front-load the weaker domains — consumer behavior and brand management — in weeks 1–4, then switch to pure practice tests in weeks 5–8. The final two weeks should be 80 % timed mock exams, 20 % reviewing wrong answers. Flashcards are useful for terminology but won't prepare you for the scenario questions as well as full practice tests will.
