Passed PSTAR on first attempt — here's what actually worked

Just got my PSTAR results back and I'm thrilled to say I passed with an 88% on my first try. I've been flying recreationally for about a year and my instructor recommended giving myself at least 4 weeks of focused study before attempting it. I ended up doing about 90 minutes a day for 5 weeks, which felt like the right pace without burning out.

The aeronautical regulations section was trickier than I expected — there's a lot of overlap between CARs and the actual Transport Canada exam questions that you need to distinguish carefully. I spent roughly 40% of my study time on that section alone and it showed on the test. The weather and airspace topics were more straightforward once I got the visual references down.

What really helped was doing timed practice runs in the last two weeks. I'd set a 30-minute timer and try to get through 50 questions, which mirrors the actual exam pacing. My accuracy jumped from around 72% to 85%+ in that final stretch. Don't skip the practice exams — they're genuinely similar in difficulty to the real thing.

Congrats on the pass! I'm about 3 weeks into studying and the airspace classification stuff is really getting to me. Did you find any particular resource better than others for memorizing the altitude limits?

The CARs overlap point is real. I've been drilling those questions and it's easy to confuse the visual flight rules altitudes. How many practice tests did you complete before feeling ready?

88% is solid, especially on the first try. I took mine last spring and scraped by with a 71%, which technically passes but I wasn't happy about it. The weather section got me — specifically the METAR decoding under time pressure. Definitely wish I'd done more timed practice like you mentioned.

Just registered for mine next month. My instructor said 75% is the passing threshold and to aim for consistent 80%+ on practice before booking. Your breakdown of time allocation is really useful, I'll shift more focus to regulations.

Honestly congrats, I wish my first attempt had gone that well. I failed with a 74% and it stung because I thought I'd studied enough. What I realized was I'd been reading the PSTAR study guide passively, like just going through it once and assuming things would stick. Second time around I actually drilled the practice questions over and over until I could explain why each wrong answer was wrong, not just recognize the right one. That made a huge difference, especially for the airspace and weather questions which kept tripping me up.

The radio procedures section was my other weak spot and I wasn't giving it the attention it deserved. It's one of those areas where the wording matters a lot and I kept second-guessing myself. I spent a solid week just on that section alone before my second attempt and ended up passing with an 82%. Not as impressive as your 88% but I'll take it. If anyone else is retaking it, don't just study more, study differently.
