Taking the New York State Notary Exam in about 5 weeks and trying to figure out how much prep time is realistic. I've seen people say everything from '2 days is plenty' to '2 months of studying.' I have a legal background but no specific notary experience, which I'd hope helps.
I've gone through the official NYS notary public license law booklet twice and I'm getting around 78% on the practice questions I've found online. The fee schedules and oath administration sections feel solid, but I keep second-guessing myself on acknowledgment vs. jurat distinctions.
The pass rate I've seen quoted is around 70-75%, which seems approachable, but I also know people who've failed twice. Is there anything specific that shows up heavily on the actual exam that isn't well covered in the official booklet?
Also wondering if the 40-question format is strictly multiple choice or if there are any scenario-based questions I should prepare for differently.
It's all multiple choice, no scenarios. 40 questions, 70% to pass. The fee schedule questions are almost always on there so know those exact dollar amounts cold, not just roughly.
With your legal background I'd say 2-3 weeks is plenty. Most people who fail are either rushing or haven't actually read the law text — skimming summaries isn't the same thing.
Took mine last spring with zero legal background and it took about 4 weeks of studying, maybe 45 minutes a day. Failed the first time by 2 questions, then passed on the retake after tightening up on the prohibited acts section. That section has more questions than you'd expect.
I studied for exactly 10 days and passed with an 85%. Legal background definitely helps — I was a paralegal for 3 years before taking it. The acknowledgment vs. jurat distinction tripped me up on a few questions too, so you're right to focus there.
