Scored 498 on my first MCAT diagnostic — is 515 even realistic?

So I just got my first diagnostic score back and honestly I'm spiraling a little. 498. I know it's supposed to be a baseline but seeing it in writing still hurts. My goal is at least a 515 because most of the MD programs I'm targeting have median scores around there. I'm giving myself 6 months of full-time studying before my August test date.

My biggest weak spots are clearly the sciences — I got destroyed on the chemistry and physics section. I've been using a mix of resources but I feel like I'm drowning in content without any real structure. I started working through an MCAT (Chemical and Physical Foundations) practice test recently to at least identify specific gaps before I commit to a full study guide plan.

Has anyone actually made a 17+ point jump in 6 months? I'm studying about 8-10 hours a day and I have no job or classes right now, so I have the time. I just need to know if this is a realistic goal or if I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

A 17-point jump in 6 months is absolutely doable — I went from 497 to 516 over about 7 months. The key for me was doing full-length practice tests every single week starting around month 3, then spending 2-3 days reviewing every wrong answer instead of just moving on to new content. Your review sessions matter more than the tests themselves, honestly.

I'd pump the brakes slightly on 8-10 hours every day — burnout is real and I crashed hard around month 4 doing that same schedule. Try 6-7 focused hours with actual breaks. Also, don't neglect CARS even if your science sections feel more urgent. I underestimated it and it cost me points. The MCAT (Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills) section requires a totally different kind of prep.

498 to 515 happened for my roommate in 5 months. She swore by Anki for biochem — like 500+ cards just for amino acids and enzyme mechanisms. Don't sleep on the MCAT (Biological and Biochemical) section either, that one's very learnable with consistent practice. You've got time, stay consistent.
