Failed the MMC — what to do differently the second time

Got my results yesterday and didn't pass. I'm frustrated but trying to stay focused on what to fix rather than dwelling on it. Writing this partly to process it and partly because I know others will be in the same spot.

My weakest area was exam prep — I knew going in that it was shaky but underestimated how much the exam weighted it. The questions weren't unfair, I just didn't have the depth I needed.

I'm rebuilding my study plan around the mmc ship construction & stability and going much slower this time — no more rushing through topics I think I know. Also going through mmc test to fill in the conceptual foundation I was missing. Planning to take 7 more weeks before rescheduling.

Anyone else been through a MMC retake? What specifically changed in your approach that made the difference?

Same experience here. The mmc ship construction & stability was what finally made it click for me — specifically the way it explains the reasoning rather than just giving answers. Took me 2 weeks of consistent practice but scores went from 68% to 84% by exam day.

This is exactly the thread I needed. I sit for my MMC in 3 weeks and have been second-guessing my prep. The exam prep area you mentioned is definitely my weak spot. Thanks for the honest breakdown.

Congrats on passing! Can I ask — how many questions did the actual exam have compared to what the practice tests simulate? I've seen different numbers online and want to calibrate my timing during practice.

I failed mine the first time too, and looking back the problem wasn't the material so much as how I was fitting study around everything else. I've got a full time job and kids, so my "study time" was basically 20 minutes here, half an hour after they went to bed, whatever I could grab. The issue was none of it stuck because it was so scattered. I'd cram on a Sunday, feel good, then not touch it again til Thursday and half of it was gone.

What actually changed things for me was being honest that exam prep needs real reps, not just reading. Second time around I blocked out two fixed slots a week that nothing was allowed to touch, and I did actual practice questions in those slots instead of rereading notes. Short and consistent beat long and random for me. You don't need more hours necessarily, you just need the ones you've got to be focused and spaced out so it sinks in. Don't beat yourself up, plenty of us needed a second go.

Quick update for anyone following along. I retook a full practice set last night and hit 78%, which is the first time I've cleared 75 on a timed run. A month ago I was sitting in the low 60s and panicking, so something's finally clicking. The stability and construction section was killing me before, and honestly grinding through this free mmc ship construction stability set over and over is what turned it around. Boring, but it worked.

I've booked my resit for three weeks out. I wanted more buffer but I also didn't want to lose the momentum I've got right now. If you just failed, don't spiral. Figure out your one weak area and hammer it. That's the whole game. I'll report back after the real thing.
