Lineman certification written exam — how much of it is OSHA safety vs electrical theory?

Taking the lineman certification written exam in about 6 weeks and I'm trying to figure out where to concentrate my hours. I've been a journeyman for 4 years so the hands-on side doesn't worry me, but the written portion is a different situation. My foreman says the safety questions make up about 60% of the exam but I've seen other posts saying it's closer to 40% depending on the certifying body.

I'm spending about 90 minutes a night on OSHA 1910.269 and the NESC standards but I honestly don't know if I'm on the right version of the code. The 2017 NESC update changed some clearance distances and I want to make sure I'm not memorizing outdated figures before test day.

The electrical theory section worries me more than safety because I learned on the job and my formal theory is patchy in spots. Ohm's law and basic circuit analysis are fine, but three-phase power calculations give me real trouble. Anyone have a resource for brushing that up without going back to an engineering textbook?

For three-phase power I used Mike Holt's electrical theory workbook and it was the right level — written for working electricians, not engineers. Got me from barely understanding power factor to passing those questions comfortably in about 3 weeks of evening study.

Don't overthink the NESC clearance numbers either. Most written exams at the certification level test the concept more than exact values.

Make sure you know the difference between qualified and unqualified worker requirements under 1910.269. That distinction shows up in multiple question formats and it's easy to miss if you're skimming the standard instead of reading it closely.

I failed the written on my first try because I didn't take the work practices section seriously. Thought I knew it from the field but the exam asks about procedures in a very specific way that doesn't match how we talk about it on the job.

Safety questions were about 50% of my exam, not 60%. The OSHA 1910.269 material was heaviest — know the minimum approach distances cold and you're already in solid shape for a big chunk of it.
