Failed IV certification twice — what am I missing?

I've been an LPN for 6 years and I can't seem to pass the IV certification exam. First attempt I scored 68%, second time 71%. The passing score at my facility is 75%, so I'm consistently close but not quite there.

I'm spending about 2 hours a day studying, mostly going over compatibility charts and flow rate calculations. The math doesn't trip me up as much as the infection control and complication management sections. Does anyone have a breakdown of which content areas carry the most weight?

My clinical supervisor recommended I focus on phlebitis grading scales and infiltration management, but I've already reviewed those at least 3 times. At this point I'm wondering if I should look at different study materials or if there's a practice test resource that mirrors the actual exam format more closely.

I have my third attempt scheduled in 4 weeks. Any targeted advice would be really appreciated — especially from people who passed on a second or third try.

Flow rate calculations got me too on my first attempt. What helped me was doing 30 practice problems a day for 2 weeks until the formulas were automatic. I passed with 82% on my second try.

The compatibility section is legitimately the hardest part. I made flashcards for about 40 common drug combinations and that brought my score up 8 points on my next attempt.

Your supervisor's advice is solid — phlebitis staging and infiltration grades showed up multiple times on my exam. I'd also make sure you know the signs of air embolism and the immediate response steps cold.

Check if your facility uses INS standards as the primary reference — the exam tends to align heavily with those guidelines. I spent 3 weeks on INS chapters 10 through 14 and passed my first time with 79%.

Just wanted to pop in with an update since I've been lurking this thread. I took a full practice exam last night and finally hit 79%, which is honestly the first time I've broken 75 consistently. Huge relief after weeks of spinning my wheels.

I'm planning to sit the real thing next Friday. Fingers crossed it sticks. Good luck to everyone else still grinding through this stuff, you're closer than you think.

Just wanted to share a quick update since I was in the same boat a few months ago. I've been drilling the free iv fluid electrolyte balance questions and honestly it made a huge difference once I stopped just reading and started actually testing myself under timed pressure. My last practice run I hit 79%, which felt like I could finally breathe.

I'm sitting the real exam again on July 8th. Fingers crossed it sticks this time. One thing that really helped me was focusing less on memorizing every compatibility combo and more on understanding the why behind the electrolyte shifts — once that clicked, the tricky questions didn't feel so random anymore. Good luck, you're closer than you think.
