AWS CW1 welding test — how different is the actual bend test from practice

Sitting for my AWS CW1 next month. Six years in the field, mostly structural steel and some pipe. I'm not worried about the knowledge portion — codes, symbols, inspection terms — that stuff I know cold. What I can't figure out from studying is how the practical bend test is evaluated and whether the test facility's setup matters as much as people say.

I've been going through aws welding processes practice questions for the written portion and feel good there. But the practical side is where I've heard inconsistent things. One guy in my shop said the bend radius tolerance is stricter at certain test centers. Another said it depends entirely on the inspector on the day. Neither of those answers is helpful when I'm trying to prepare.

Specifically asking about 3G position certification. Any recent test-takers who can share what the actual evaluation criteria felt like versus the book version?

The bend test criteria are standardized in AWS D1.1 — the inspector doesn't have discretion on the pass/fail dimensions. What varies is the equipment quality. If the test center has an older guided bend jig that's worn, your coupon can bind. Ask the facility what jig they're using before you schedule.

3G was my path too. The written is easier than people make it sound if you've actually been on job sites. The practical is where experience pays off — just weld the way you've been welding for six years, not the way you think they want to see it.

Passed CW1 last spring. The knowledge test was probably 35% codes and symbols, 30% inspection terminology, rest split between processes and metallurgy basics. Nothing surprising. Your shop experience will carry the practical.

One thing nobody tells you: get good sleep before the practical day. Fatigue shows in your bead consistency and the inspectors notice tremor in the hands. Sounds obvious but I've seen experienced welders mess up test coupons they could do in their sleep because they were nervous and tired.
