IST pre-employment test — the math section was way harder than I expected

Just took the IST (Industrial Skills Test) as part of a hiring process for a manufacturing position and the math section blindsided me. I've worked in production environments for 6 years so I expected mechanical reasoning and safety questions to be the main focus, but the math questions were genuinely challenging — fractions, ratios, reading measurements from scales, some basic algebra. I didn't prepare at all and I'm worried about my score.

The test was about 60 questions and I had roughly 45 minutes. The reading comprehension section was fine and the mechanical concepts questions were straightforward. But I definitely spent too long on some of the math problems and had to rush through the last 8 or so. The scale-reading questions where you had to interpolate between marks on a ruler or gauge were the ones that really slowed me down.

I don't know my score yet and the company said they'll follow up within a week. If I don't get this role, I want to actually prepare properly for the next time I encounter this test. What resources are people using to prep for the math and measurement sections specifically?

I prepped for an IST-style assessment last year using WorkKeys practice materials. The applied math sections are very similar in format. Ramsay Corporation also has official practice tests for their IST products that are worth buying if you're going to be applying to manufacturers regularly.

The 45-minute clock is tight if you're not used to timed math tests. Practice under time pressure specifically — not just the content but getting comfortable skipping and coming back. A question you skip and answer in 20 seconds beats one you agonize over for 3 minutes.

Fractions and ratios are worth drilling on paper, not just digitally. A lot of the test questions involve reading a measurement and then doing a quick calculation in your head or on scratch paper. If your mental math on fractions is rusty, that's the highest-ROI thing to fix before the next attempt.

The gauge and scale reading questions are the ones most people underestimate. Khan Academy's measurement and unit conversion sections are free and cover exactly that type of question. Spend 30 minutes a day for two weeks on those and you'll be in a completely different position next time.
