IHSS provider orientation exam — what's actually on it?

Just got assigned my first IHSS client and I have to complete the provider orientation before I can start getting paid. I've heard there's a test at the end but I can't find solid information about how many questions there are or what score I need to pass. Anyone been through this recently?

I completed about 4 hours of online training modules yesterday covering timesheet submission, abuse reporting requirements, and what services IHSS does and doesn't cover. The modules weren't hard to follow but I'm not sure how closely the test mirrors the training versus testing general program knowledge.

I'm also confused about county differences. I'm in Los Angeles County and a lot of the information online seems to be from other counties or older versions of the program. The backup provider system and electronic timekeeping requirements seem to vary depending on where you look.

Any tips on what to focus on? I really just want to pass on the first attempt so I don't delay my start date.

LA County's version is slightly different from what I did in Sacramento but the core content is the same — timesheets, SOC forms, covered services, mandatory reporting. Don't overthink it. The test isn't designed to trick you, it's just checking you absorbed the training.

I passed on first attempt in under 20 minutes. Seriously don't stress — it's a compliance exam, not a competency test. Watch the videos, read the required docs, and you'll clear it easily.

The orientation exam is pretty straightforward, at least in my county. Most questions come directly from the training modules so if you paid attention and took notes you'll be fine. I got around 88% without doing any extra prep beyond just watching the videos.

One thing worth knowing: electronic visit verification questions have been showing up more since EVV became mandatory. Make sure you understand how the telephonic timesheet system works and what to do if there's a system error. That tripped up a coworker of mine.

I went through the IHSS provider orientation last year while working full-time at a restaurant, so I totally get the time crunch. Honestly it wasn't as bad as I expected. I just watched the modules in chunks during my lunch breaks and reviewed the main topics at night. The test at the end is mostly about understanding your responsibilities as a provider, client rights, and safety stuff like reporting abuse. It's not trying to trick you, it's more like making sure you actually paid attention.

One thing that helped me was finding a ihs practice test pdf to get a feel for the question style before sitting down to do the real thing. You don't need to memorize everything word for word. Just make sure you understand the basics around timekeeping, what you can and can't do as a provider, and how to handle emergencies. If you've been following along with the orientation materials you'll be fine, I promise it's passable without cramming.

I went through the IHSS provider orientation a few months ago and the test at the end wasn't as scary as I thought, but the trick is understanding the reasoning behind the rules, not just memorizing answers. Like, I kept getting tripped up on the abuse reporting questions until I actually understood why certain things are mandatory versus optional, and once that clicked the answers became obvious. For extra practice I used a ihs practice test pdf which helped me see what the wrong answers were trying to trick you into choosing.

The questions are mostly about recipient rights, what you can and can't do as a provider, and how to handle situations that could put your client at risk. Don't just memorize "always report" or "never do X" — ask yourself why that's the rule and you'll nail it even if the wording on the actual test is different from anything you studied.
