How long did you spend studying before passing the IHSS exam?

Hi everyone, I just got hired as an IHSS provider for my mom and found out I need to complete this orientation and pass some kind of assessment before I can start getting paid. I'm honestly a little nervous — I haven't taken any kind of formal test in years. I'm not even totally sure what's on it or how hard it is.

I've been looking around online and found a few IHSS practice test resources, but they vary a lot in quality and I don't know which ones are actually worth using. I've also been skimming through what people call an IHSS study guide but it's basically just the county handbook which is like 60 pages long. Has anyone actually sat down and gone through all of that?

Any IHSS exam tips would be really appreciated — especially if you've been through the In-Home Supportive Services orientation recently. Did you study a lot beforehand, or is it pretty straightforward if you pay attention during orientation? I want to be prepared but also don't want to stress myself out over nothing.

I had a different experience — I failed the first time because I rushed through and didn't realize how specific some of the questions were about IHSS regulations. Second attempt I spent about a week, maybe 30-40 minutes a day, and passed easily. The questions about paramedical services and what requires a doctor's sign-off tripped me up the first time. Definitely worth doing more than one practice run if you're not super familiar with the program rules.

Honestly, don't overthink it. I took mine last spring and spent maybe three evenings going through the handbook plus one practice test run. The exam focuses mostly on safety, client rights, and your responsibilities as a provider. If you actually do the orientation instead of zoning out, you'll be fine. I passed with like an 88 or something. Just know the stuff about timesheets and what you can and can't do without authorization.

My county's orientation was pretty thorough and the assessment after wasn't bad at all. Just focus on client dignity, scope of work, and reporting requirements. Those showed up a lot on mine. Good luck — you've got this!
