ICC contractor exam — NEC article questions were harder than any study material I used

I sat for the Illinois Commerce Commission electrical contractor exam last week and barely missed passing — scored a 69% and the cutoff is 70%. I've been doing electrical work for 11 years and the NEC code application questions hit differently on the real exam than anything I prepped with. The study guides I used covered Articles 100 through 250 pretty well but the exam pulled from Articles 300 and 400 more than I expected.

I was doing about 1 hour of review per day for 6 weeks leading up, which in hindsight wasn't enough. The load calculation problems specifically took longer than I budgeted and I ended up rushing the last 15 questions. If I'd given myself 10 more minutes on that section the score would have been different.

For my retake I'm going back to basics on wiring methods and working through an ICC practice test set every other day to build pattern recognition for the code-lookup style questions. Has anyone used the JADE Learning prep modules for the Illinois-specific content? I want to know if their question difficulty actually matches the real exam before I pay for a subscription.

69% is so close. My retake score jumped 8 points just from doing 30 timed NEC code-lookup drills per week. The exam rewards fast tab navigation more than raw memorization.

Load calculation timing was my issue too on my first attempt. I built a reference sheet for the most common formulas since you can bring the NEC book but looking things up mid-calculation still eats time.

Articles 300-400 being heavier than expected is something I've heard from multiple people now. Do a full pass through wiring methods before your retake, not just the branch circuit material.

JADE Learning is decent for NEC fundamentals but the Illinois-specific regulatory questions on the real exam aren't well-covered there. I supplemented with the actual ICC administrative rules document and that filled in the gaps.
