IAR exam difficulty compared to Series 65 - realistic prep timeline?

I'm a financial advisor looking to get my Investment Adviser Representative registration sorted for a new state and I'm trying to map out my study plan. My firm is giving me 8 weeks and I want to make sure that's actually enough time. I've already passed the Series 65 about 4 years ago, so I'm not starting from scratch on the concepts.

From what I've read, the IAR exam covers ethics, fiduciary standards, investment vehicles, economics, and portfolio management. I'm probably strongest on investment vehicles and economics given my background, but ethics and fiduciary standards tend to be tricky because questions are scenario-based rather than factual recall. Last time I sat a major exam I put in 90 minutes a day for 6 weeks and that felt right.

I've been using an IAR practice test to get a baseline and I'm sitting around 68% right now, which tells me I have real gaps to close before test day. The passing score is around 72% and the exam has 130 questions with a 3-hour limit. Anyone who's taken this recently - how did the ethics scenarios compare to the Series 65 in terms of difficulty?

Also, is there a specific prep provider worth the money? I see Kaplan and Knopman Marks come up a lot but haven't committed to one. My budget is around $300 for materials.

One thing that surprised me was how much state-specific content showed up. Make sure you know the specific registration requirements and notice filing rules for whichever state you're registering in - that content isn't always well-covered in generic study guides and it showed up on my exam more than I expected.

I took the IAR about 6 months ago after holding a Series 65 for 5 years. The ethics and fiduciary sections felt harder than the 65 because the scenarios are more nuanced - they're less about knowing the rule and more about applying judgment in edge cases. Budget at least 3 weeks specifically on those two sections.

Kaplan worked well for me but I've heard Knopman Marks has better scenario-based practice questions, which would help specifically with the ethics content. If budget allows, some people buy both - Kaplan for content review and Knopman for practice exams. Might be tight at $300 though.

Your 68% baseline with 8 weeks is totally workable - I started at 65% and passed with a 76%. The key is doing full practice exams under timed conditions, not just drilling topics. I did one full 130-question timed exam per week for the last 4 weeks and it made a big difference on time management.
