How do I interpret my 3rd grader's IAR math scores and help them improve?
My daughter just got her IAR results back and I'm honestly a little lost on what everything means. She scored in the "approaching expectations" range for 3rd grade math, which sounds bad but her teacher said it's not the end of the world? I've been trying to figure out the stat meaning behind each performance level — like is there a big gap between "approaching" and "met"? It reminds me of when my husband explained his r6 stat tracker to me, all these numbers that mean nothing until someone breaks down what they're measuring.
She's got another shot to build these skills before 4th grade, so we've been using some online practice. We started with the IAR Test 3rd Grade Math #1 and it really showed us where the gaps were — fractions and place value are rough for her. I want to be strategic about the next few months, not just throw worksheets at her.
Has anyone gone from approaching to met expectations in one school year? How many hours a week are we realistically talking about? Would love to hear from other Illinois parents who've navigated this.
