Hootsuite Platform Certification - passed in 2 weeks, not as hard as people say
Passed the HPC last Friday and honestly it wasn't as difficult as some posts online made it sound. The exam is 60 questions and you've got 60 minutes, so it's roughly one question per minute. I finished in about 42 minutes and got an 88%. Passing score is 80%, so there's a reasonable buffer if you've put in some time with the platform.
I prepped for about 12 days. Days 1-7 I went through all the free Hootsuite Academy course material - it's included with the certification purchase and covers everything on the exam. I took notes as I went rather than trying to remember it all passively. Days 8-12 I did practice questions and revisited sections where I was getting things wrong. The analytics and reporting section tripped me up most - make sure you know what each metric means and where to find it in the dashboard.
Content areas that showed up heavily: content scheduling and calendar management, stream setup and monitoring, team management and permissions, analytics and ROI reporting, and social listening basics. The questions about team permissions and approval workflows were more detailed than I expected - worth spending extra time there if you're not using those features day-to-day.
The cert is valid for 12 months. For most marketing roles it's more of a checkbox than a differentiator, but it's a low-cost add to your resume and the knowledge is actually applicable. If your company already pays for Hootsuite, the cert costs $199 through the Academy - sometimes there are discount codes floating around LinkedIn.
The team permissions section definitely has more questions than you'd expect. I work solo so I barely use those features and it showed on my exam - scored 82% and those were my weakest answers. Worth reviewing even if you don't use them regularly.
Is the exam still proctored online? I remember reading somewhere that they moved to an unproctored format but I'm not sure if that's current. Taking mine next week and trying to understand what the testing environment looks like.
The course material from the Academy is actually decent. I've used Hootsuite for 3 years and still learned a few things about the reporting features I hadn't explored. Don't skip it even if you're an experienced user.
88% in 42 minutes is solid. I finished mine with 8 minutes left and scored 83%. The analytics questions are where I got nervous - some of them require knowing specific metric names that aren't things you'd naturally remember without reviewing the Academy material.
Honestly I almost quit halfway through studying for this. I'd read a few chapters, take a practice quiz, bomb it, and convince myself I just wasn't getting it. I think I rescheduled the exam twice because I didn't feel ready. What turned it around for me was actually drilling questions instead of just re-reading notes, and the analytics and reporting section was where I was weakest so I hammered that part the most. This set of free hpc analytics reporting questions was a big help there.
So yeah, don't let the early frustration trick you like it almost tricked me. I went in expecting to fail and passed with room to spare. If you've been stuck and feeling like it's not clicking, push through a little longer. It clicks faster than you'd think once you stop just reading and start answering.
