I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I failed the HPC twice before I finally passed last month, and both times I thought I was ready. First attempt I scored a 68 when you need a 75. Second time, 71. I was devastated and honestly considered just giving up on the certification entirely. What changed for attempt three was that I stopped reading the material passively and started drilling with an HPC practice test every single morning before work — like, 20 questions before coffee even kicked in.
The study guide I was using before wasn't bad, but it was too broad. For the third attempt, I focused almost entirely on pain assessment tools, non-pharmacological interventions, and the ethical/legal stuff around end-of-life care. Those three areas are way heavier on the actual exam than most prep materials suggest. I also joined a small study group through my hospice workplace which helped enormously.
Anyone else have a rough road to passing? What exam tips finally clicked for you? Specifically curious if others found the communication/family support questions as tricky as I did — those killed me on attempt two.
