Failed HPC exam twice — what finally worked for my third attempt

I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I failed the HPC twice before I finally passed last month, and both times I thought I was ready. First attempt I scored a 68 when you need a 75. Second time, 71. I was devastated and honestly considered just giving up on the certification entirely. What changed for attempt three was that I stopped reading the material passively and started drilling with an HPC practice test every single morning before work — like, 20 questions before coffee even kicked in.

The study guide I was using before wasn't bad, but it was too broad. For the third attempt, I focused almost entirely on pain assessment tools, non-pharmacological interventions, and the ethical/legal stuff around end-of-life care. Those three areas are way heavier on the actual exam than most prep materials suggest. I also joined a small study group through my hospice workplace which helped enormously.

Anyone else have a rough road to passing? What exam tips finally clicked for you? Specifically curious if others found the communication/family support questions as tricky as I did — those killed me on attempt two.

This hits close to home. I passed on my second try and the thing that made the difference was timing myself on practice questions. I used to just answer them at my own pace but the real exam has you feeling the clock the whole time. Once I started simulating exam conditions — 2.5 hours, no interruptions — my scores jumped from the low 70s to consistently 80+. The symptom management questions were brutal for me too, especially around dyspnea management.

The communication questions tripped me up the same way. I kept overthinking them and trying to pick the "most clinical" answer when honestly the right answers usually come down to patient-centered language and validating feelings first. One of my instructors told me to imagine you're talking to your own family member and that reframe actually helped a lot. Also — did your study guide cover the Medicare hospice benefit in depth? That section surprised me with how many questions touched on eligibility and election periods.

Congrats on passing! Three attempts takes real persistence. For anyone reading this early in their prep: do NOT underestimate the ethics content. I thought it'd be minimal but it showed up constantly, especially around withholding treatment decisions and cultural considerations. Give that section real time.
