Finally passed my civil service exam after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I've been lurking here for months and I finally have good news to share. I passed my state civil service exam last week on my third attempt. The first two times I went in underprepared and honestly just hoped for the best — big mistake. This time I actually committed to a real study plan and it made all the difference.

The biggest change was doing timed Government and Civil Service practice test sets every single day for about six weeks. I'd do one full session in the morning before work, review what I got wrong, then move on. I also found a solid study guide that broke down the verbal reasoning and data interpretation sections, which are where I was losing the most points. Those two sections alone were killing my score.

If you're studying for state or local government positions specifically, I'd really recommend the Government and Civil Service State and Local Government practice test — it mimics the format closely and the explanations actually helped me understand the logic, not just memorize answers. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the same spot I was six months ago.

Congrats! Third time's the charm seriously. I'm sitting for mine in about 8 weeks and the data interpretation section scares me too. Can I ask what score you were aiming for? My county requires a 70 to get on the eligibility list but I've heard you basically need an 85+ to actually get called for an interview.

Solid exam tips in this post. One thing I'd add: don't neglect the situational judgment questions if your exam has them. They seem easy but there are definitely wrong answers that sound reasonable. Those tripped me up more than the math sections.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. I failed mine in February and have been dragging my feet on rescheduling. The timed practice approach makes sense — I think I was studying passively, just reading the study guide without actually testing myself under pressure. Going to look into those practice resources you mentioned and try to build a real schedule this time.
