I've already gone through the standard "how to get british citizenship" results on Google and most of it is just selling prep courses. Looking for actual free resources.

What I've tried:
- Practice tests here (solid, especially for could meghan have gotten her british citizenship)
- A few YouTube channels but the quality is all over the place
- Reddit threads from 2+ years ago (some outdated)

What I haven't tried yet:
- The official BRITISH study guide — is it actually worth reading cover to cover?
- Library resources — anyone actually found useful materials there?
- Specific YouTube channels that cover how to get british citizenship for eu well

I don't mind paying for something that's genuinely better than free, but I want to max out free options first. Budget is tight.

What resources did you use that you'd actually recommend?

Worth mentioning: the how hard is the british citizenship test covers exactly the areas people tend to struggle with most.

For what it's worth from someone who's been through it:

The BRITISH is one of those exams where the practice tests really do prepare you well. The style of questioning is pretty consistent. If you're comfortable with "how to get british citizenship" material under timed conditions, you'll be fine.

The one thing I'd add: read the question stems very carefully. They sometimes add a qualifier that completely changes the right answer and it's easy to miss when you're going fast.

Also check whether you need to schedule the exam in advance — some testing centers book up 2-3 weeks out.

Coming back to this thread because I just passed my british-citizenship-test yesterday. Everything people said about the how to get british citizenship section is spot on — that was the hardest part for me too. For anyone still studying, don't skip the applied questions in the british citizenship practice test pdf. They're the closest to what you'll actually see.

What helped me most with how to get british citizenship specifically: stop thinking about it as a topic to memorize and start thinking about the types of decisions it's asking you to make. Once I shifted to that frame, my british-citizenship-test scores in that section jumped about 12 points within a week.

One thing that genuinely helped me was going through old Life in the UK Test questions and tracking which chapters I kept getting wrong, then going back to the handbook and reading just those sections out loud — not the whole thing, just the weak spots. The dates and Acts of Parliament are the worst for most people. Writing them down on index cards sounds old-fashioned but it sticks better than just re-reading.

Also worth doing timed practice runs closer to the real thing — the actual test is 45 minutes for 24 questions, which sounds fine until you're second-guessing yourself on something like the exact year the UK joined the EEC. The british uk citizenship test practice I used had decent question variety and the timed mode made a real difference in how I approached the exam day itself.

One underrated free resource: the official GOV.UK guidance pages for specific topics (immigration rules, rights and responsibilities sections). They're dry but they're accurate, and some questions pull directly from that kind of official language rather than the handbook wording.
