EMT salary vs paramedic salary — is the extra school actually worth it?
I just passed my NREMT and got my EMT certification but now I'm trying to decide whether to go straight into the field or continue to paramedic school. The emt salary in my area (Pacific Northwest) is around $42-48k, but paramedic salary jumps to $60-75k depending on the agency and whether you work fire-based EMS.
The extra 12-18 months of paramedic school is a big commitment on top of already having student debt. But I've heard from several medics that the scope of practice difference is huge — paramedics run ALS calls, push meds, interpret 12-leads. EMTs are BLS only unless you're working in an ALS system with a medic partner.
I used the EMT Airway and Breathing Practice Test 2 to really nail the airway fundamentals before my NREMT, and honestly it made me realize how much deeper the paramedic curriculum goes. If you plan to stay in EMS long-term rather than using it as a stepping stone to fire or nursing, paramedic school seems like the right call financially. Thoughts?
Go paramedic if EMS is your career, not just a stepping stone. The salary gap compounds over time, and ALS experience opens doors to flight programs, critical care transport, and management. Two years from now you'll be glad you pushed through the extra schooling.
That's the perspective I needed. I've been leaning toward paramedic school but wanted to hear from people actually in the field. Starting the application process next month. Thanks!
