I passed my ibew aptitude test and interview back in October and I'm sitting on the eligibility list, but I have no idea how long the wait actually is. The JATC told me "it depends on work demand" which isn't exactly actionable information.
I know the construction industry runs in cycles and some people say they waited three months while others say two years. I'm trying to figure out whether to keep my current job at face value or start picking up more hours to build savings for the transition period. Right now I'm in a mid-sized metro in the Midwest, if that helps narrow down typical timelines.
While I wait, I've been going back through IBEW Aptitude Numerical Reasoning practice problems to stay sharp — I figure keeping the math fresh can't hurt. I'm also thinking about taking a basic electrical safety course to show the JATC I'm serious when they do call.
Has anyone been through the waiting period? What did you do to stay connected and make sure you didn't get overlooked when calls went out? And does your place on the ibew union list move at a predictable rate or is it totally unpredictable?
Midwest here — waited about eight months from eligibility list to my start date. The key thing people don't tell you: call the JATC every 4–6 weeks just to check in and confirm your contact info is current. Not aggressively, just a polite "wanted to stay on your radar" call. Two people ahead of me on the list didn't respond when called and got skipped. Keep your phone on and respond immediately when the call comes — they sometimes only give 24–48 hours to accept before moving to the next person on the list.
If your local allows it, look into whether you can sign up as a residential wireman in the meantime — some locals have a separate shorter program and it can get you working sooner while you wait for the full electrician apprenticeship list to move. It also shows initiative. A few guys in my class came in that route and transitioned to the inside wireman program later. Not every local offers this but it's worth asking at the hall directly.
