NECA apprenticeship exam — journeyman vs foreman level, what actually changes
Five years in, journeyman card held for two years. My local is pushing for NECA foreman certification and I'm trying to understand what the exam actually adds to what I know from NECA's apprenticeship program. The journeyman exam felt like a solid test of code knowledge and installation practices. What does the foreman-level assessment test beyond that?
Working through the neca electrical theory & principles practice material and a lot of the technical content is familiar. But I'm guessing the foreman credential tests leadership and project management content too, and I don't know how that breaks down in the exam format.
The NECA foreman certification (NFEP) adds manpower planning, scheduling, crew supervision, and job cost tracking to the technical foundation. You're right that it's not purely technical — the leadership and project coordination content is probably 40% of the exam. If you haven't dealt with direct labor cost reporting or crew productivity measurement, that's where to focus.
Two years as a journeyman is early for foreman cert — most people in my local have 8-10 years before the push comes. Not a criticism, just context that the management content may be newer to you than to someone who's been leading small crews informally for years.
The NECA training materials for the NFEP are pretty good. The management sections cover the NECA Management Education Institute (MEI) content — job planning, material management, labor productivity. Work through those modules if you haven't already.
The technical foundation from your journeyman training is solid. The foreman-level exam won't stump you on code — it'll test whether you can translate technical knowledge into crew-level execution decisions. Think less "what's the correct installation method" and more "how do I sequence this work efficiently with three apprentices."
