Finally passed my DUI exam after three attempts — here's what actually helped

Okay so I want to share my experience because I wish someone had told me this stuff before I started. I'm a substance abuse counselor in Ohio and my agency recently started requiring us to have a DUI specialist certification. I completely underestimated how technical this exam would be — I failed twice before I finally passed last month.

The biggest mistake I made early on was just reading through the material without really testing myself. Once I found a solid DUI practice test that actually matched the exam format, everything clicked differently. The questions on the real exam are really scenario-based, not just definitions. My study guide didn't prepare me for that at all until I started supplementing it with practice questions focused on assessment tools like the AUDIT and DAST.

Anyone else find the pharmacology section brutal? I probably spent 15 hours on that section alone. Happy to answer questions if anyone is prepping right now — I remember how stressful it was waiting to see that pass result.

Thank you for posting this! I'm sitting for mine in six weeks and the pharmacology stuff is killing me too. Someone told me to make flashcards specifically for drug classifications and their interaction effects. Did you find any particular exam tips that helped with the case study questions? Those feel way harder than straightforward recall questions to me.

Three attempts is honestly more common than people admit. I passed on my second try and the thing that changed for me was slowing down on scenario questions instead of going with my gut. The exam loves to give you two answers that both seem right — the difference is usually about ethics or documentation protocol. Read every option twice before choosing.

The AUDIT scoring cutoffs tripped me up the first time. Make sure you know the exact numbers cold, not just roughly. That came up more than I expected on the actual exam.
