DUI Instructor Certification exam - what to expect after 6 weeks of prep?

I've been studying for the DUI Instructor Certification for about 6 weeks now, putting in roughly 2 hours a day on weekdays. I passed my state's background check and got my provisional approval, so the exam is the last hurdle. Has anyone here taken it recently? I'm scoring around 74% on practice questions and not sure if that's enough to feel confident going in.

The material covering pharmacology and field sobriety testing has been the toughest for me. I can get through the legal statutes fine—those are pretty straightforward once you memorize the BAC thresholds—but the impairment assessment section keeps tripping me up. My wrong answers cluster around the 18-22% range on that topic specifically.

I'm also wondering how much the practical component weighs compared to the written portion. My program director said the written is 60% of the final score, but I've seen conflicting info online. If anyone's been through a state-approved DUI education program certification recently, I'd really appreciate some clarity on the breakdown.

The pharmacology questions were brutal for me too. I spent 3 extra days just drilling alcohol absorption rates and how medication interactions affect field tests. That focused review bumped my score from 71% to 87% in about a week.

Which state are you in? Requirements vary a lot. Texas has a separate practical sign-off that counts for 40% while some states make it purely written. Knowing your specific weighting changes how you should spend your last two weeks.

I certified in 2024 and the written was definitely weighted heavier than the practical for me—closer to 65%. If you're hitting 74% on practice tests you're probably within striking distance, but I'd push to get above 80% before scheduling. The impairment assessment section has a lot of trick wording on the actual exam.

Don't underestimate the ethics module. I thought it was a throwaway section and ended up missing 4 questions from it. Budget at least 30 minutes reviewing the professional conduct standards before test day.

Just passed mine two weeks ago after almost the same prep schedule, so hang in there. The thing that actually moved the needle for me wasn't the textbooks -- it was drilling the dui/questions/legal and ethical standards section repeatedly. I kept skimming that stuff assuming I knew it, but the exam hit those topics way harder than I expected, especially around mandatory reporting and liability boundaries.

74% is honestly close. If you can get that section solid you'll probably clear it comfortably. I went in at around 76% on my last practice run and finished the real thing with room to spare. Good luck -- you've already done the hard part with the background check.

Honestly, I almost bailed around week four. I was stuck at 71% and couldn't break through no matter what I drilled. The section that finally clicked for me was dui/questions/legal and ethical standards -- once I really understood the liability piece, everything else started connecting. That 74% you're hitting isn't far off. It's enough to pass if you tighten up your weak spots in the last stretch.

The actual exam felt harder than most practice sets, mostly because the wording is tricky and there's a lot of "best answer" situations where two choices look right. Don't second-guess yourself too much once you've committed to an answer. I went in expecting to fail and walked out with an 81%. You're closer than you think.
