CPP exam - which domains are the hardest and how did you study for them?
I've been working in horticulture retail for 11 years and finally decided to pursue my CPP designation this year. My manager got hers two years ago and said it opened doors for her, including a pay bump and being taken more seriously by wholesale reps. I'm hoping for similar results.
I started going through the American Nursery and Landscape Association study materials and the plant identification section is way more detailed than I expected. We're talking hundreds of cultivars across annuals, perennials, woody ornamentals, and turfgrass. I can identify most of what we actually sell, but the exam apparently covers plants I've never stocked or worked with.
The business management and customer relations domains feel like my strong suit since I've managed staff and handled inventory for years. But the integrated pest management section is giving me trouble — there's a lot of chemistry and regulatory detail I've never had to think about formally even though I deal with pests practically every day.
How many weeks did people spend on plant ID specifically? And is there a good flashcard deck or visual resource that helped you memorize cultivars? I'm a visual learner and reading descriptions isn't cutting it.
Plant ID was definitely the hardest part for me too. I spent about 4 of my 10 study weeks just on that domain, using actual nursery catalogs with photos alongside the study guide. Comparing visual references helped way more than reading descriptions cold.
I'd recommend getting your hands on the Ball RedBook or Dirr's Manual for plant ID — those are way more thorough than the ANLA study guide for visual learners. Cross-reference the cultivars listed in the exam blueprint specifically.
Don't underestimate the business operations domain even if it feels intuitive. The exam tests specific terminology around inventory turns, markup vs. margin, and loss prevention that may not match how you think about it informally. That caught me off guard.
The IPM section has a lot of memorization for pesticide categories and application regulations. I made flashcards for active ingredients and target pests and reviewed them during lunch breaks. Took about 3 weeks to feel solid on that domain.
Passed with an 84% overall on my first try, so the approach worked.
