Complete beginner here — where do I even start with CompTIA A+?

So I've been working in retail for three years and my cousin keeps telling me to get into IT. I finally looked it up and I keep seeing CompTIA A+ everywhere, but honestly I had no idea what CompTIA was until like two weeks ago. From what I understand now, CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) is basically a nonprofit that creates vendor-neutral IT certifications — so you're not learning just Cisco or just Microsoft, you're learning foundational skills that apply broadly. Makes sense for someone like me with zero formal IT background.

What is CompTIA A+ certification exactly, and is it actually worth it for someone starting from scratch? I've also been trying to figure out how much is the CompTIA A+ exam — I saw something like $253 per voucher, and there are two exams (Core 1 and Core 2), so that's potentially over $500 total which is a lot on my budget. I've been drilling with the CompTIA Software Troubleshooting Practice Test 3 to see where I stand and honestly I'm lost on about half of it.

Also someone mentioned the cert expires — does CompTIA A+ expire? If I'm investing this kind of money and time I need to know what I'm signing up for long-term. Any advice from people who've done this would be genuinely appreciated.

Yes it expires — CompTIA A+ is valid for three years, then you need to renew through their CE program (continuing education). You can renew by taking a higher cert like Network+ or Security+, or by earning 20 CEUs. Honestly it's not that bad once you're in the ecosystem. For your budget question, $253 per exam is the current retail price but you can often find vouchers discounted through Udemy or your local workforce development office. Definitely ask around before paying full price.

I was exactly where you are 18 months ago — zero background, just curiosity. A+ is absolutely the right starting point. To answer your question about how to take the CompTIA A+ exam: you schedule through Pearson VUE online, pick either in-person at a testing center or online proctored from home. I did the testing center because I didn't trust my home setup. Studied about 90 hours total across both exams, used Professor Messer's free videos plus a lot of practice tests. Passed Core 1 on first attempt with an 762, Core 2 took me two tries.

Don't sleep on the CompTIA Operational Procedure 1 practice material either — operational procedures show up more on Core 2 than people expect. I underestimated that domain and it cost me points. Good luck, you've got this!
