Failed the childcare exam twice, what am I missing in my study approach?

Okay so I really need some advice here because I'm honestly starting to feel defeated. I've taken the childcare certification exam twice now and both times I've fallen just short — got a 68 the first time and a 71 the second. I need a 75 to pass and I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've been reading the official handbook cover to cover, making flashcards, watching YouTube videos. My director really needs me to get this done before August so the pressure is on.

The sections that keep tripping me up are child development milestones and health/safety protocols. I feel like I understand the concepts when I'm studying but then on the actual exam the questions are worded so differently from what I expect. A friend suggested I actually do more Childcare Health, Safety & Nutrition practice tests to get used to that question style specifically. Has anyone else found that doing timed practice tests helped more than just reading the material?

Any exam tips from people who've actually passed would mean the world right now. How many hours did you study total? Did you focus on one section at a time or review everything together?

I was in the exact same spot last year. What finally clicked for me was switching from passive reading to doing practice tests under timed conditions every single day for two weeks. The question wording is definitely a skill you have to build separately from knowing the content. I'd say I put in about 40 hours total of focused study, but maybe 60% of that was active practice questions rather than reading. The health and safety section is notorious for trick wording.

Child development milestones are what got me too. I made a chart organized by age — like 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months — covering motor, language, and social-emotional skills separately. Once I could see it visually it stopped blurring together. Also the Childcare Child Development 2 and 3 practice tests on this site are really good for that section, the questions felt very close to what showed up on my actual exam.

Don't be too hard on yourself — going from 68 to 71 means you ARE improving. Two points away is actually really close. Focus your last push on whatever the exam breakdown says is the heaviest weighted domain. Usually that's where a few extra correct answers makes the biggest difference.
