I've been compiling resources as I study for my CCP - Certified Child Care Professional certification and figured I'd share what I've found. All free unless noted.

Practice Tests:

  • PracticeTestGeeks — most comprehensive collection I've found, good question explanations, covers CCP - Certified Child Care Professional, CPT - Certified Preschool Teacher, and ECE - Early Childhood Education Certificate. Free.
  • Official practice materials from the certifying body — usually 1 free sample exam, worth doing even though it's short

Study Materials:

  • The official CCP exam handbook / candidate guide (PDF, free from the certifying body's website)
  • YouTube — search for "CCP exam prep" — there are surprisingly good free video reviews for most childcare certifications
  • Reddit r/certifications — people post their exam experiences and tips regularly

Paid (worth it if budget allows):

  • Official study guides run $30-80 for most childcare certifications — worth it if your exam has lots of specific factual content
  • Some certifying bodies offer prep courses — check if your employer covers it (many do for required certifications)

What resources have others found useful for childcare exams? I'll add them to this list.

The official candidate guide is something a lot of people skip but it literally tells you the topic weighting and domain breakdown. It's the roadmap for your study plan. Never skip it.

Great list. I'd add: LinkedIn Learning has some childcare-related courses that overlap with cert content, and if you have a library card many libraries give free access to it. Also check if your local library has access to O'Reilly or similar — tons of technical content there.

For CCP - Certified Child Care Professional specifically, I found the PracticeTestGeeks explanations were detailed enough that I didn't need to buy a separate study guide. The combination of doing the practice questions + reading every explanation (for both right and wrong answers) covered most of the content I needed.

So I failed CCP on my first try and honestly it was a wake up call. My problem was that I crammed the textbook and figured that'd be enough. It wasn't. The actual exam leans way more on real scenarios than I expected, like how you'd actually handle a situation with a kid or talk to a parent, not just definitions you can memorize. I knew the terms cold and still bombed the application questions.

Second time around I changed my whole approach. I did practice tests almost every day instead of just reading, and I'd force myself to explain why the wrong answers were wrong before moving on. PracticeTestGeeks was the one that helped most for that because the explanations actually break down the reasoning. Track the questions you keep missing and drill those specifically. Don't just chase a passing score on the practice set, make sure you understand the why. That shift is what got me through.

Just passed my CCP last month so figured I'd add to this. The thing that actually moved the needle for me wasn't more practice tests, it was slowing down and reading every explanation even on the ones I got right. I kept skipping that early on and it cost me. Once I started treating the wrong answers like little lessons instead of just chasing a score, stuff finally stuck.

One weird tip, look at how other cert prep pages break down their scoring so you know what passing actually means before test day. This aws certified cloud practitioner total marks breakdown helped me wrap my head around how points get weighted, and it made me way less panicky going in. You don't need to memorize everything, you just need to know where the easy points are and not leave them on the table. Good luck, you've got this.
