Passed CFPS on second attempt — what finally worked for me

So I finally got my CFPS last month after failing the first time by 12 points. I'm a fire protection engineer with about 6 years of experience, and I honestly thought my field knowledge would carry me through without much prep. Big mistake. The first time I sat for it, I walked in after skimming the study guide for maybe two weeks and got absolutely humbled.

What turned things around was being more systematic about it. I spent 8 weeks on round two — about 90 minutes a day on weekdays. I found a solid CFPS practice test resource that mimicked the real question style pretty well, which helped me get comfortable with how NFPA codes get tested (it's not just recall, they love application scenarios). Weak spots for me were Chapter 6 water supply stuff and the foam systems section.

Anyone else taking it this year? Happy to share my full study breakdown if it helps. Also curious what exam tips others picked up along the way — especially around the codes and standards weighting.

This thread is exactly what I needed to find today. Retaking in 6 weeks and feeling the pressure. Good to know 8 weeks of focused prep is realistic. What practice test platform did you use — was it question bank style or full timed exams?

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in September and the water supply hydraulics section is killing me too. I've been using the SFPE handbook alongside the CFPS study guide but honestly the practice questions have been more useful for figuring out where my gaps are. How many practice exams did you go through before you felt ready? I keep second-guessing myself on the detection and alarm questions.

The application-style questions are no joke. I passed on my first attempt but I work in suppression systems so that chunk was comfortable for me — the egress and life safety stuff tripped me up more than I expected. One exam tip that helped: when you're stuck between two answers, ask yourself which one NFPA 1 or 101 would back up explicitly. Usually narrows it down pretty fast.
