Finally passed CFPS after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results yesterday and I passed with a 78%. Honestly didn't think I'd make it after failing by four points the first time around. I work as a fire protection engineer for a mid-size consulting firm and my company basically required this cert for a promotion I've been gunning for since last year. First attempt I went in pretty cocky — figured my on-the-job experience would carry me. Big mistake.

Second time I completely changed my approach. I spent about six weeks using a structured CFPS study guide alongside the SFPE Handbook, focusing heavily on hydraulic calculations and the sprinkler system design sections since those killed me before. I also drilled with a CFPS practice test every weekend to get comfortable with the question format, which is way more application-heavy than I expected.

Anyone else find the water supply analysis questions particularly brutal? And for folks still studying — don't underestimate the foam systems section. That one caught me totally off guard both times until I really buckled down on it.

Congrats! I took mine in March and the hydraulics section is absolutely no joke. What I found helpful was actually drawing out the pipe networks by hand rather than just memorizing formulas. Once I understood the logic behind the Hazen-Williams calculations, the exam questions clicked. Also, exam tips I'd give anyone: read every question twice — there are a lot of 'except' and 'not' qualifiers buried in there that'll trip you up if you're rushing.

Four points the first time and then a 78 on round two — that's a solid jump. The foam section gets everyone, don't feel bad. NFPA 11 is dense and they love testing the obscure application ratios. Keep that study guide handy for the next renewal cycle too.

This is really encouraging to read. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in about eight weeks and I'm terrified. I've been using practice tests to gauge where I am and honestly my scores are all over the place — strong on codes, weak on suppression agent applications. Did you find the actual exam matched the difficulty of the practice questions you were doing, or was it harder? Trying to calibrate my expectations.
