Studying for the CEP Level 1 exam and trying to figure out the right sequencing. The content guide has a lot of ground to cover — stock options, RSUs, performance shares, ESPP mechanics, tax treatment, and regulatory compliance.

My background is in HR so I know the basics conceptually but have never administered these plans. Should I build up from the mechanics or start with whatever's highest-weighted?

Also curious how math-heavy the exam actually is — I've heard conflicting things.

The math isn't brutal but it's present. Know how to calculate spread on exercise, compute ESPP discounts, and work through basic diluted share calculations. These are formula-based and testable.

Tax treatment for NQSOs vs ISOs comes up a lot. The ordinary income vs capital gain distinction and the AMT implications for ISOs are both commonly tested — get those down early.

HR background actually helps a lot on the compliance and plan design sections. You already understand ERISA basics and compensation committee dynamics — lean into those strengths.

Start with the mechanics before anything else. If you don't understand how options vest and exercise, the tax treatment questions won't make sense. The foundation material makes everything else learnable.
