Failed CDCR exam twice — what actually helped you pass?

So I just got my second failed result back and honestly I'm pretty demoralized. I've been trying to get into corrections for two years now and the written exam keeps tripping me up. My biggest problem seems to be the situational judgment sections — I can never tell if I'm overthinking the scenarios or just genuinely don't understand what they're looking for in a correctional officer candidate.

I've been using a CDCR practice test I found through a test prep site, which helped me understand the format, but I'm not sure I'm targeting the right content areas. My supervisor at my current security job recommended I spend more time on the reading comprehension and report writing portions since those are heavily weighted. Has anyone found a solid study guide that breaks down exactly what the test covers? I've seen a lot of generic law enforcement prep materials that don't really address CDCR specifically.

I'm planning to retest in about 8 weeks. Any exam tips from people who passed on their third attempt or later would genuinely mean a lot right now. What finally clicked for you?

Third attempt got me through — what changed was I stopped cramming and started doing timed practice sections every morning for 30 minutes. The situational judgment stuff really does have a pattern once you internalize that CDCR prioritizes safety and chain of command above pretty much everything else. Also, don't sleep on the reading comp. I was skimming those passages and losing easy points. Once I slowed down my score jumped like 12 points.

Honestly the study guide from the official CDCR website has a breakdown of the competency areas that most third-party materials miss. I cross-referenced it with a practice test series and that combo worked for me. The report writing section tripped me up too — they want very specific factual language, no opinions, short declarative sentences. It felt unnatural at first but it's a learnable format. Give yourself more than 8 weeks if you can. I needed 12.

Don't give up. I know three people personally who passed after failing multiple times. The exam is genuinely hard and the cutoff score varies by hiring cycle, which nobody tells you upfront. Keep grinding the practice tests and trust the process.
