Finally passed my BMST after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results back this morning and I passed with a 78, which honestly had me tearing up a little. Background: I'm a 34-year-old maintenance tech at a manufacturing plant, been in the trade for about 8 years but never bothered with formal certification until my company started requiring it for senior positions. Failed my first attempt back in February by 4 points, which was brutal.

What changed the second time around was actually sitting down with a proper BMST study guide instead of just skimming my old training manuals. The hydraulics and pneumatics sections killed me on attempt one — I knew the hands-on stuff cold but the theory questions tripped me up badly. I spent about 3 weeks this time doing focused practice, maybe 90 minutes a night after the kids went to bed.

The biggest game changer was doing timed BMST practice test sessions to get comfortable with the pacing. The real exam moves fast and I was leaving questions blank last time just from panicking. Anyone else here studying for this one right now? Happy to share more specifics about what I focused on.

Congrats! I'm about 3 weeks out from my test date and the hydraulics section is exactly what's giving me trouble too. Can I ask — were there a lot of questions on fluid power calculations or was it more conceptual? I've been going back and forth on how deep to go with the math. My goal is hitting at least 75 to satisfy my employer's requirement.

This is the kind of post I needed to see today. Failed mine in March and I've been dragging my feet on scheduling a retake. You've convinced me to stop sulking and actually book it. Thanks for sharing the real breakdown instead of just saying 'study hard and you'll pass.'

The pacing thing is so real. I passed on my first try last year but I almost didn't finish the electrical section because I spent way too long on a couple of questions I should've flagged and moved on from. My exam tip for anyone reading this: if you're stuck for more than 90 seconds, mark it and come back. You can almost always eliminate two wrong answers on review anyway.
