Finally passed my BMST after two attempts — here's what actually worked
So I just got my results back this morning and I passed with a 78, which honestly had me tearing up a little. Background: I'm a 34-year-old maintenance tech at a manufacturing plant, been in the trade for about 8 years but never bothered with formal certification until my company started requiring it for senior positions. Failed my first attempt back in February by 4 points, which was brutal.
What changed the second time around was actually sitting down with a proper BMST study guide instead of just skimming my old training manuals. The hydraulics and pneumatics sections killed me on attempt one — I knew the hands-on stuff cold but the theory questions tripped me up badly. I spent about 3 weeks this time doing focused practice, maybe 90 minutes a night after the kids went to bed.
The biggest game changer was doing timed BMST practice test sessions to get comfortable with the pacing. The real exam moves fast and I was leaving questions blank last time just from panicking. Anyone else here studying for this one right now? Happy to share more specifics about what I focused on.
