Failed my banking exam twice — what am I missing in my study approach?

Okay so I'm honestly frustrated and a little embarrassed to even post this. I've taken the banking certification exam twice now and both times I've landed in the 68-71% range. I need a 75 to pass and it feels like I'm just barely missing it every single time. I've been using a Banking practice test site and reading through a study guide my coworker lent me, but something isn't clicking with the investment banking and capital markets sections specifically.

My timeline is tight — I have to pass before my performance review in mid-July, so I've got about 6 weeks. I'm putting in maybe 1.5 hours a night after work. The Banking Investment Banking practice tests have been helpful for identifying weak spots, but I feel like I'm memorizing answers instead of actually understanding the concepts. Has anyone else hit this wall? What actually moved the needle for you?

Any exam tips from people who've been through this would be genuinely appreciated. Specifically struggling with DCF valuation and regulatory capital requirements if that helps narrow it down.

Honestly the regulatory capital stuff tripped me up too. Basel III vs. Basel IV distinctions kept getting scrambled in my head. What helped was making a one-page comparison chart — Tier 1 capital, risk-weighted assets, leverage ratios all side by side. For the investment banking modules I'd say focus less on memorizing formulas and more on understanding WHEN you'd use each method. Examiners love scenario-based questions that test judgment, not just recall. Six weeks is enough time if you stay consistent.

I was in almost the exact same spot last year — stuck at 70% for what felt like forever. What finally helped me was switching from passive reading to active recall. Like, instead of re-reading the study guide, I'd close it and try to write out the DCF steps from memory. Painful at first but my score jumped 8 points in three weeks. Also the Banking Investment Banking 2 practice test has really good valuation questions if you haven't tried that one yet.

68-71% and needing a 75 is actually really close — you're not far off. Try doing timed practice sets under exam conditions instead of open-book studying. Simulating the pressure makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Good luck, you've got this.
