Finally passed my ASA exam — here's what actually worked for me

I've been lurking here for months while prepping for the ASA certification and honestly this community helped me more than I expected, so I figured I'd give back. Passed last Tuesday with a 78 — not flashy but it got the job done after two failed attempts earlier this year.

What finally clicked was combining an ASA study guide with timed practice sessions. I'd been reading passively for weeks but not actually testing myself under pressure. Once I started doing full-length ASA practice tests, I realized I was consistently weak on statistical process control and measurement systems analysis — both of which showed up heavily on the real thing. Spent the last two weeks drilling those two sections almost exclusively.

For anyone just starting out: don't underestimate the math. I'm not a numbers person naturally and I almost bombed the SPC section again. Also budget more time than you think — I logged around 80 hours total prep across three months. Happy to share my resource list if anyone wants it. What are your biggest sticking points so far?

Congrats! I passed mine back in March and the SPC stuff absolutely blindsided me too. My biggest exam tip is to memorize the control chart decision rules cold — not just recognize them but be able to apply them fast under time pressure. I used flashcards for those specifically. The practice tests I found online were hit or miss on that topic, so I ended up making my own from the Body of Knowledge.

Thanks for posting this. I'm about six weeks out from my exam date and feeling pretty shaky on measurement systems analysis too, funny enough. Can I ask — were the practice test questions you used pretty close to the actual exam difficulty? I've seen some free sets online that feel way too easy and I don't want to get a false sense of confidence going in.

80 hours sounds about right honestly. I tried to rush it in 40 and paid for it with a failing score. Take your time with the prep, especially if statistics isn't your background. The exam doesn't reward cramming.
