ASA 101 and 103 back to back - good idea or too much at once?

I've been sailing on friends' boats for about 3 years but I've never gotten formally certified. I'm planning to do ASA 101 Basic Keelboat this summer and want to eventually charter in the Caribbean, which typically requires at least 101, 103, and 104. My question is whether it makes sense to do 101 and 103 in the same season or if there's a learning curve that makes spacing them out smarter.

I found a sailing school that offers a combined 101/103 course over 4 days and I'm tempted to just knock both out at once. But I've also talked to people who say 103 Coastal Cruising is a significant jump from 101 and that rushing into it without some time on the water in between is a mistake. The combined course is about $850 and seems efficient, but not if I'm going to be overwhelmed.

Has anyone done the combined format? Did having existing sailing experience before starting 101 make the progression feel more natural? I'd really like to be at the 104 level by next summer so I'm trying to map out a realistic timeline.

Charter companies in the BVI and Grenadines typically want 101, 103, and 104 plus a logbook with offshore miles. Some also want 105 for offshore passages. Make sure you're building sea miles alongside certifications - a few operators ask to see 15+ days logged before handing you the keys to a 45-footer.

I did the combined 101/103 course and it was absolutely fine. With 3 years of informal sailing time you'll breeze through 101 by day 2 and 103 will feel like a natural extension. The main jump is in navigation and heavier weather handling, not basic boat control.

I've done all the way through 114 and my honest take is that the biggest jump is between 104 and 114, not 101 to 103. The combined 101/103 course is very reasonable, especially if you already know port from starboard and how to trim a sail.

Went the other direction - did 101 one summer and waited a full year before 103. Honestly I think that hurt me because I had to relearn a lot of things. If you have a solid foundation already, just do the combined course and don't overthink it.
