Failed ALCPT twice — what am I missing in my study plan?

Okay so I'm a little embarrassed posting this but I need some help. I've taken the ALCPT twice now and both times I scored around 65, which isn't enough to meet the 70 cutoff my base requires for the language program I'm trying to qualify for. I've been studying on my own using some old flashcards a buddy gave me, but clearly that's not cutting it.

I finally broke down and started using a proper ALCPT practice test online and honestly I can't believe how different the format feels compared to what I was doing before. The listening sections especially — I had no idea they were structured that way. I've got about six weeks before my next attempt and I'm wondering if anyone has a solid study guide recommendation or knows which areas trip people up the most.

My weakest spots seem to be the vocabulary comprehension and the longer audio passages. Anyone been in this spot and actually turned it around? Really need this to go through.

Been there, man. I failed at 68 before finally passing at 77 on my third attempt. The listening sections are brutal if you're not used to the pacing — they don't repeat anything and the answer choices are designed to trip you up on similar-sounding words. What helped me most was doing timed practice sets every single day, not just reviewing vocab in isolation. Also, the exam tips I found on a couple test prep forums saved me honestly. Give yourself at least an hour of focused listening practice daily.

The vocabulary part is heavily context-based, not just definitions. A lot of people study word lists and then get thrown off because the ALCPT tests whether you understand the word in a sentence, not just standalone. I used a mix of a study guide and actual English radio programs to get my ear used to natural speech patterns. Took me about 4 weeks of consistent work to see my practice scores jump from the mid-60s to low 80s. Six weeks is totally doable if you stay consistent.

Don't sleep on the grammar section either — it's smaller but it's basically free points if you prep it right. Most people hyperfocus on listening and lose easy marks there. Good luck on the next attempt, sounds like you already know where to focus.
