ALCPT score of 60 - is that enough for technical training programs?

I just got my ALCPT results back and scored a 60. My language school said anything above 55 is passing for general coursework but I'm trying to qualify for a technical training program that reportedly requires an 80. I'm not sure if I should retake immediately or look into whether my score might qualify me for intermediate programs in the meantime.

I've been studying English for about 18 months now. My listening comprehension is noticeably stronger than my reading - I think I lost most of my points on vocabulary and grammar sections. When I took practice tests before the exam I was consistently scoring 65-70, so the 60 was disappointing but not completely shocking given test nerves.

For people who have retaken the ALCPT after a lower score, how long did you wait before the retest and what did you change in your approach? I'm considering focusing specifically on academic vocabulary since that seems to be where I struggled most, and maybe 2-3 months of intensive work before retaking.

Also wondering if a 60 would limit me for other programs while I work toward an 80. I know score ranges mean different things for different branches and programs so I want to understand where a 60 puts me in practical terms.

Find out the exact score requirement for your target program before assuming you need an 80. Some programs accept a 70 with a waiver or have provisional enrollment for scores between 70-79 that lets you start while retesting.

The vocabulary gap between a 60 and an 80 is significant but it's one of the most trainable areas. Academic Word List vocabulary and listening to English-language technical content helped me more than any grammar drills when I was in the same position.

Test nerves are real with the ALCPT listening section because you only hear each item once. Practicing with timed audio you can't replay really helped me simulate that pressure before my retake.

A 60 qualifies you for many general English-medium courses but technical and specialized programs typically want 75-80 minimum. Two to three months is a reasonable timeline - I went from a 58 to a 79 in about 10 weeks of focused work, roughly 2 hours daily.
