Failed my AL knowledge test twice — what am I missing?

Okay so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I've failed the Alabama knowledge test at the DMV twice now and I'm honestly at my wits end. The first time I just kind of winged it, figured I'd driven enough in other states that I'd be fine. Wrong. Second time I read through the handbook once and still didn't make the cutoff. I got 70% and you need 80% to pass.

What really tripped me up were the road sign questions and the stuff about right-of-way at weird intersections. I've been using an AL DMV practice test this week and noticing I keep getting the same sign categories wrong. Does anyone have a solid study guide or a system that actually worked for them? I want to pass this on my third attempt next Thursday.

How many hours did you guys actually put in before you felt ready? I'm studying in 30-minute chunks after work so I can realistically do maybe 3-4 sessions before my appointment.

I passed on my first try but I definitely didn't take it lightly. Spent about four days doing practice tests — probably 45 minutes each day. The key for me was doing timed tests so I couldn't second-guess myself. Road signs were like 30% of my actual test so don't skip those. If you're getting sign questions wrong consistently, make flashcards. Old-school but it works.

The AL handbook has a lot of info that won't actually show up on the test, which is kind of frustrating. Focus on blood alcohol content laws, school zone speeds, and headlight rules — those showed up multiple times on mine. I found that the exam tips on some prep sites were more useful than just re-reading the whole manual. Also the actual DMV test felt harder than most free practice ones I found online, just a heads up.

Four sessions should be enough if you're doing full 30-question timed practice tests, not just reading. Aim to hit 90%+ consistently before you go in. You've already identified your weak spots which honestly puts you ahead. You've got this.
